We all know that car seats are essential for keeping our children safe while on the road.
Did you know it’s just as important to regularly maintain your child’s car seat?
With so many things on your plate, it’s easy to let car seat maintenance fall by the wayside.
Help is here! Below are our quick tips on how to keep your car seat in tip-top shape, along with a short video on maintenance and care.
1. Check your user manual.
The first step in maintaining your car seat is to read the manual. You might think you know everything there is to know about your car seat, but it’s always best to check the manual for specific maintenance instructions. After all, the manufacturers are the experts when it comes to car seats.
2. Clean regularly.
It’s important to keep your car seat clean, not only for aesthetic reasons but for safety. Small cracks and crevices can harbour dirt, grime, and even bacteria. To clean your car seat, use mild soap and a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or scrubbing too vigorously, as this can damage the seat fabric or padding. Our seats have removable and machine-washable covers, as well as a fabric tool to help! Be sure to give them a gentle bath at 30c or hand wash them.
For rotation seats, regular dusting will help remove any dirt that may affect the turning mechanism.
3. Visual Inspection.
Once your car seat is clean, it’s time to give it a thorough inspection. Look for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, fraying, or missing parts. Pay special attention to the harnesses and straps, as these are critical for keeping your child secure in the event of an accident. If you notice any damage, consult the manual or contact the manufacturer for replacement parts.
4. Store your seat properly when not in use.
When you’re not using the seat, store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. This will help ensure that it’s ready to go whenever you need it again.
5. Register your car seat.
Many companies will keep track of important information about your car seat in case of a recall. This way, they can let you know as soon as possible if there are any issues with the seat so you can get it fixed or replaced.
To register your car seat, you usually just have to fill out a form on the manufacturer’s website with your contact information and the serial number of the seat. Once you’ve registered, make sure to keep the information in a safe place in case you need it later. You might even want to create a file on your computer dedicated to important papers like this so you can easily find them when you need them. For us, it’s a simple online form, that not only ensures the above but also unlocks your product lifetime warranty.
6. Replace after a crash.
Even if there doesn’t seem to be any damage to the seat, it must be replaced after any kind of accident. The materials in the seat can weaken without being visible to the naked eye, which means it might not perform as well in a subsequent event. At Swandoo, we offer a replacement scheme to take away any of the stress.
By following these simple tips, you can help ensure that your child’s car seat is always safe and ready to protect them in the event of an accident. Just remember to perform regular visual inspections, clean often and store properly when not in use.
